Florida is actively working to minimize all effects of the Deepwater Horizon Oil mishap. Florida is looking not at just containment and shore clean up, but is also considering long term effects as well. Responders are developing strategies to restoring the damage created on the environment, but first must determine what effects these habitats will endure.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is leading the state in its mission to respond to the impacts of this oil disaster along our precious coastline. After any hazardous substance release, multiple agencies and organizations work cooperatively to insure cleanup and eliminate or reduce health risks to humans and our environment.
Though sporadic sitings of tarballs do continue, Florida's coastline is not expected to be impacted over the next 3 days. According to NOAA, there is no significant amounts of oil entering the loop current. Currently about 90% of Florida's coastline remain unimpacted.
