Pompano, African pompano video workshop scheduled
February 26, 2010
Contact: Lee Schlesinger, 850-487-0554
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has scheduled a public video workshop for March 16 to receive comments on possible rule changes for pompano and
African pompano. There will be several locations around the state where you can take part in the workshop via a videoconferencing connection, or you can participate via a voice-only telephone line.
The FWC is currently considering changes to Florida's permit fishery regulations (see the related presentation at MyFWC.com/Commission under the Dec. 9-10, 2009 meeting agenda), and pompano and African pompano are managed together with permit in the same FWC rule. Consequently, there may be amendments needed to pompano and African pompano rules to go along with the possible permit rule changes, and the FWC is seeking feedback on these potential rule changes.
The FWC is considering whether to apply permit and pompano regulations in federal waters adjacent to state waters, including the combined permit and pompano six-fish daily recreational bag limit (with an allowance of one fish over 20 inches fork length), the pompano and permit slot limit of 11-20 inches fork length, and allowable recreational fishing gear for pompano.
The Commission is also considering whether to apply African pompano size and bag limits and fishing gear restrictions (including spearfishing) in federal waters. Participants also will discuss the commercial harvest of African pompano.
The FWC encourages interested people to attend the workshop at one of the videoconferencing sites listed below or via voice-only telephone lines on Tuesday, March 16, from 6-8 p.m. EDT (5-7 p.m. CDT in Panama City).
